The His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman is the most mind-blowing read I've experienced in recent years. Read the first (Northern Lights or Golden Compass if you're in the US) and you'll be hooked...

Hi metagirl, have you read 'The Old Devils' by Kingsley Amis? It won The Booker prize (well, some award anyway) a few years back.

I don't have one favourite book, some of my favourites though are 'Pride and Prejudice' Jane Austen, 'A Tale of Two Cities' and 'David Copperfield' both by Charles Dickens, 'The Unlikely Ones' by Mary Brown 'Office Life' by Keith Waterhouse and 'The Hobbit' by JRR Tolkien

To name five off the top of my head, I would suggest "Trainspotting" by Irvine Welsh (when the language clicks, it's great), "Captain Corelli's Mandolin", "Money" by Martin Amis, "White Teeth" by Zadie Smith and "The Beach" by Alex Garland. You might also want to try something by Rushdie, Nick Hornby or Roddy O'Doyle. However, it made me realise how long it's been since I've read modern British fiction, so I expect there are people who could give you more informed choices!

thanks for those, please add more if you can...i've read all the victorian stuff - gave me my first impressions of England. How about that Banks character? Don't really like Martin Amis, too much of a bloke for my liking. Haven't read Kingsley tho - will give him a try.

I like most of the books mentioned.
One book that I recently read was A Woman In Black by Susan Hill. This is a really good, well worth reading.
The author's use of langauge creates wonderful images, and manages to make readers feel slightly uneasy all the way through.
Hard to say which is my favorite book.

I have many but 'To Kill a Mockingbird' is my fave travelling book.  Just read 'Lord of the Flies', that was a corker and '1984' is pretty good too...  Couldn't get into 'Catch 22'.

For easy reading Janet Evanovich is entertaining and for good thrillers it has to be Geoffrey Deaver or Jonathan Kellerman.

Saying all of that, i'll read almost anything!

I recently did an assignment, at college, on To Kill a Mocking Bird and I really enjoyed it. I also did The Crucible by Arthur Miller (A play) and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this.
A couple of recommendations for easy, quick reading would be: Animal Farm by George Orwell.

I too couldn't get into catch 22 but one of my favorites was songbird by Sebastien Faulkes which was a stunning read.

I love 'A Short History Of Nearly Everything' by Bill Bryson. Or anything by Stephen King.

I would also recomend The Northern Lights by Philip Pullman. This is the only one of the trilogy that I have read, so far, but I will be reading the others very soon. Brilliant book!
