How did Liverpool get its name?

It is thought to be a corruption of 'Elver pool', the pool where eels could be found. The whole notion of 'Liver birds' is a Victorian invention.
Because of this link with the liver birds, 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue' says it known previously as ItAin'tAlfMumapool.
Sorry but the correct answer is that it was called "the pool" by locals and visitors commented on the distinct yellow colour of the river (Mersey) being similar to bile so the name to visitors became Liver-pool
