Extremely unlike any continental gold mark. Probably the manufacturer's mark, or possibly M for Messerschmidt if it's an airman's cap badge.
it could be a copyright mark a diamond shape is often used on pewter with either Ges. Gesch., which is Gesetzlich Geschutzt: legally protected, patented, or M which is Musterschutz: copyright. What other indicators are on the badge? which WW and what colour is the metal?
Could it be the cap badge of the German paratroopers?

M standing for Generalmajor Meindl........famous German paratrooper
Are you sure that it's an "M" and not a "W"? Not that I know what either one would mean, but it could make a big difference into your research into it.
I've had an item in my shop a German modernist metal umbrella stand and it had a diamond mark which had a W in it -it could have been an M though.
Photos always help with questions like this, 098....
If in fact it is a "W", the obvious guess would be "Wehrmacht"; however. I think that would be too simple: The German military favoured "flashy" badges and insignia...But, who knows?
Well that certainly looks like an "M", shoota: a "stylized" bridge.
