Remember that the Hakenkreuz (hooked cross aka Swastika) is illegal in some countries which include France and Germany (the latter can only display for historical reasons, such as in books, museums etc.). Therefore the cross is often covered to avoid offence and to make it legal.
WW2 Knights Cross and Iron Cross have a swastika in the centre of the cross.
