The thing about the library - often the copy at alexandria was the one that was copied and survived - had a thing about seven as a magic number.

Hence a lot of ancient authors looked as thought they had only written seven books or plays

The great Library at Alexandria, built by Ptolomy II in the 3rd Century BC was destroyed (by fire?) in the 1st century AD. The destruction is still a mystery as there are conflicting reports of how it happened and who caused it. For ages Julius Caesar was blamed because he set fire to the enemy fleet in the harbour in 47 AD and it was said (by only one, centuries later account) that the sparks flew into the town and destroyed the library, some temlpes all in the Palace Quarter. This is almost certaily bunk, as Caesar was reported to have captured and have been billeted in the Palace  Quarter where the giant stone built library stood.

Since its destruction several earthquakes and floods mean that the actual site is now under the sea. However, the masive Bibliotheca Alexandrina was built on the shore near the undrwater ruins in 2002 at a cost of 220 million dollars. See here for a little picture of that massive complex.
