this seems pretty unlikely - Wikipedia certainly isn't convinced, and suggests it was just a cute form of publicity. How would anyone have known? Did Queen Victoria give interviews on the subject? I would have thought not...

PS missmooncat I'm not aware that he was a ladies' man - he was very Victorian! His son, later Edward VII, was, and Victoria persuaded herself that Edward's womanising helped drive Albert into an early grave. But it seems from her diaries that the two of them had a very happy marital sex life; she makes unmistakable references to fun, as I recall.

Whether this story is true, or simply an excuse for those with Germanic heritage to boast about their masculinity is up for debate, but the safe money is on this not being the truth either.
