26 Answers
Been watching the olympics a lot, sports like gymnastics diving weightlifting and boxing who are reliant on judges scores to win a medal im sure half the judges dont know what their looking at these athletes have been training for 4 years for some numpty judge who i bet hasnt even played the sport their judging on gives them dodgy marks !!! rant over

I think the OP has a valid point, with the 'first past the post' sports (which the Olympics were once about) there is no uncertainty about the winner. Some of these judgements seem on the level of the Eurovision Song Contest. I watched (but not for long) white water canoeing, - cor blimey!

Lot of assumptions there Bernie:
"Been watching the olympics a lot, sports like gymnastics diving weightlifting and boxing who are reliant on judges scores to win a medal im sure half the judges dont know what their looking at.....
They are usually past Olympians and I think they have expert knowledge of the sport. Weightlifting judges do not effect the lift, they only verify the technique, boxing often resolves itself without judges but even bouts that don't have clear criteria. Perhaps you can tell me from your research how amateur boxing is judged? Nope thought not.
.... these athletes have been training for 4 years for some numpty judge who i bet hasnt even played the sport their judging on gives them dodgy marks !!!
....see above
rant over " - lot of assumptions there bernie clearly you have no idea about sport generally so please do some research before you come on here with your ill informed bigotry. Stick to soccer sunshine, you should be able to cope with that.

BernieC - assuming that this is not a rant a la AOG or 3T as it would be a waste of time for all of us ....
you are asking how you can assess something which is subjective ( as a result of impressions ) rather than ojbective ( how far did they jump?)
you may say that you can't and all the educationalists will say o yes we can!
first of all you wanna be sure that the exam measures what you want.
so that for example an exam for insurance agents measures their knowledge of insurance law - not a big question for gymnastics
then you want to be sure that one examiners opinion of "good" is the same as another's ( is that interpersonal variability is minimised)
and you wanna be sure that the examiners' opinion of 'good' last year is the same as this year ( inter-exam variability is minimised )
and once you can do that to outside objective assessment
you call yourself an educationalist ....
which can all be done with training ....
well you did ask

oh and yeah - sorry missed 3Ts rant - nothing personal - the word judge was a red rag to a bull ...
oh and yeah - when my niece was courting / being courted by a sports mad New Zealander it was necessary to turn out and watch him playing rugby ( as she herself commented 'this is serious' )
and that included saying 'it was obvious that you were the best player on the field I dont know why the judges didnt notice'
it worked

Hi Bernie .... No I am not
one of my colleagues on a council was an educationalist
I said to him 'your first paper was 1976. I looked you up.' and he said 'yeah you have to start early if you are gonna make an impression' [ golly!]
and he came up with that
about fifteen years ago at a council meeting - about exams
( yes I have a long memory )
and it was a case like an expert can be very succinct about his expert subject. [greavesy]
