Generally recognised as such as he controlled all England, not just a part of it. Who became king at that time was decided by the Witanagemot (council of wise men). Automatic inheritance via the rule of primogeniture only came in with the Normans.

him or Athelstan. Egbert's kingdom didn't last, thanks to Viking invasions; Athelstans's has - more or less.
