Mail's April Fool - Ludicrous!

Did anyone see the Daily Mail's pathetic 'April Fool' story on Saturday?

All the nationals traditionally sneak in a bogus story, and they are usually subtle enough to fool a lot of people.

But the idea that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle married in a Last Vegas wedding chapel was too stupid to fly for even a moment.

They used bad 'lookalikes' shot out of focus with 'Ms Markle' hiding her face.

It was a bad idea, badly executed.

That said - did anyone actually fall for it?

it was a bit OTT and not as effective as the usually hidden away more subtle gags that just could/might be true !

Didn't see the Mail one, but was completely taken in by the Guardian's report of a polar bear who had drifted south on an ice floe and come ashore on a remote Scottish island.

I thought it was pretty good, just the sort of thing their readers like. I doubt they'd have been fooled - if it was true it would have been on pages 1 to 20, not page 96 - but they probably enjoyed the joke.

It has become increasingly difficult for any newspaper or website to launch a genuinely good April Fools' story. I looked at this years' selection and most were pretty risible. Anyone with any common sense could sniff them out.

A good April Fools' joke would be slightly believeable - and the problem we have now is that we live in a time where we read newspaper sites that print so much fake news, and PR cobblers, that when April 1st comes around, it's just another day of nonsense.

Indeed - it was a vcery different time indeed - 1958 to be precise.

I remember discussing it with my mum and dad, and they said that in those days, Richard Dimbleby was the equivalent to the voice of God - if he told you the sky was green you'd get your eyesight checked because it must a problem with your eyes that it still looks blue.
