It has nothing to do with the context you are meaning and everything to do with the size of the land-mass.

So 'No', they are not right.
Are you seriously telling me Johnny foreigner usually tells you Great Britain 'was' Great Britain?

C'mon ........
TWR....this is because the term GB is entire misundertood.

It was never meant as a description of it greatness, or superiority. It was meant to distinguish where we all live, from other places, like Brittany or Ireland.

But I suspect TWR, that this is not what you are referring to !

As far as I am concerned Britain is still as wonderful as it always has been. Its a very different place from when I was born in 1953, but all places change over time, and Britain can't or shouldn't be immune from those changes.
In my experience, the term Great Britain is infrequently used, having been replaced by the term United Kingdom (UK) which seems to give one the suspicion that the OP has got it about right.
I was under the (maybe false) impression, that it was Britain.
I believe this is known as "seeking offence for the sake of it".
I have never ever heard that so I agree with Talbot!!!
As for people asking if I am British abroad - that has never happened - they normally ask if I am English!!!
lol Islay x
Have had (usually Americans) asking me where I'm from and when I say Scotland they want to know which part of England is it.
(oh dear!)
I get tired of having to explain the differences between GB, UK, British Isles and Britain when we're in the US, so many people ask. As has been said Great is geographical, we're Great Britain and what the French call Brittany is Little Britain!
Oh yes, the number of times when we've said we're from Northern England we've got the reply Oh, you mean Scartland.
Yes Alba never have I had anyone when I am abroad say Great Britain, and if I really want to confuse them further i tell them Northern Ireland whilst speaking in a terribly English accent!
When mu husband lived in the states he was often complimented on his English (strange coming from Bolton really) and this was often followed by - 'Are you Canadian?'

## they normally ask if I am English!!!##

Same here Islay, and been asked many times on my travels.
In the states at a shopping mall, the lady assistant said, I just love the way you English talk, and can you show me your currency.
When she saw the new £20 note, she was overwhelmed and very ott.

In Morocco 40 odd years ago, there were some kids playing football near the souk, and I kicked the ball back to them, they shouted English, English, Georgie Best :-)

as this is in CB, I'll regale you with one tale.
(well, maybe 2, but I'll be brief)
On a holiday to Orkney, on the mainland we met a lovey US couple who were on a 3 week trip of Europe and they never knew the size of Europe (bless)

The hotel Mr Alba and I stayed in, on one day it was the chef's day off (quite right) anyhoo, she had decided to go to Scotland for her day off.

(I love that chef!)

Trt, if it had been 20 years ago they'd gave said Beckham. They'd have been right, Beckham is English, but Best wasn't.

When anyone asks me I say London.
Best was ..er best known for playing football for Man united so it is quite understandable some kids from Morocco would think he was English.
E for Egg and Georgie Best !
