We've got two lovely old water mills in my town, both of which have now been turned into flats:

With that second one, one of the flats is directly over the river. When it's in flood there's a hell of a noise inside that flat!

There's also a beautiful (fully-working) water mill just a short drive from here:

One of my favourite days out is to drive to Houghton Mill, which is a working water mill, set in beautiful surroundings (on the edge of a lovely village, with some great pubs), ownded by the National Trust:

I lived in Sheffield for 20 years, which is a city which wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the water mills which used to power the knife grinding works owned by the 'little mesters'. Quite a few of the mill buildings still exist but there are far more mill ponds, together with the old 'head goits' and 'tail goits'.
