As of Friday 18th January Mike Veale has resigned as Chief Constable of Cleveland Police amid complaints of very serious misconduct. This follows on from him leaving the Wiltshire Force after the 1.2 million pound probe into Sir Edward Heath.Barry Coppinger the area's Police and Crime Commisioner said that" he was the best man for the Job." Goodness knows what the other candidates were like then.
It brings to mind the mantra trotted out when eight-figure salaries are paid to bankers and company chairs who fail utterly at their job - "We have to pay salaries at this level to attract the right calibre of applicant ..."
If Mr Veale is willing to resign instantly, it does tend to lead to the conclusion that whatever has happened, he is not going to escape with his career and reputation intact.
If he was innocent of pending accusations, surely he would fight to clear his name?
Apparently he had his work Mobile phone in his golf bag, played a bad shot and smashed the club into his bag thus breaking the phone. Then tried to say he had dropped the phone and it had been run over.
Ah yes - the Edward Heath investigation. I almost forgot about that.
Personally I thought spending £1.2m to come to the conclusion that Heath would be interviewed was money well spent, and I can't wait to see whether he's arrested following the interview.
