I am playing the part of a French Mayor in Paris in the 1940's for a murder mystery, any ideas of costume?

Assuming we're discussing a male role, why not the same "costume" as an English mayor of the 1940s - a 2/3 piece suit most of the time (with a trilby hat outdoors)? You could add an impressive chain of office and a tricolor sash for any scenes where the mayor has to dress more formally.
