Charles I: Downfall Of A King

Another fine piece of television showing that there are still tiny outposts of integrity and intellectual curiosity in the corrupt empire.
9.00 on BBC4 - first of a three-parter.

well spotted Khandie
at the time there was only one - King Charles
but I presume he was referred to as you maj or sire
( henry VIII started your maj I think)
No one today refers to our liege lady as Elizabeth the second
even tho she clearly is (*)
the russian for elizabeth II is elizaveta windsora ( near enough )
and at skool I was so old that the history book referred only to Queen Elizabeth like Queen Anne or Stephen or Victoria
Now - James 1 kicked off as James I ( James I and VI actually) as unified king of england and scortland - the first titular act 1604 I think.
now everyone gets one - so some humourless dour scots told me that our liege lady should be Elizabeth I, II and I
that is the second of england the the first of scotland and the first of the united kingdom
and I was able to reassure him that there was a titular act of 1952 specifying that she was to be called Elizabeth II ( even tho')
the english have a rule for everything
remember The Madness of George III was filmed as The Madness of King George - as the americans were unable to understand they said that we didnt do the King bit a lot, and secondly it implied ( existential implication for those of a philosophical bent) that there were prequels Madness of King george II and Madness of King George I

Claire Bloom yes, but don't forget Mary Ure as Alison;
"Alison Porter : I suppose none of this could ever really have worked. I do love you Jimmy, I shall never love anyone as I love you, but I can't go on, I can't take part in all this suffering, I can't.
Jimmy Porter : It's no good fooling about with love you know. You can't fall into it like a soft job without dirtying up your hands. It takes muscle and guts. If you can't bear the thought of messing up your nice, tidy soul, you better give up the whole idea of life and become a saint, because you'll never make it as a human being. It's either this world... or the next."
Oh boy!
