They wanted freedom to preach and worship as they wanted, and they did not want to be bound by the English Church's rules. They went to New England because they had heard that prospects there were good for the foundation of new settlements: the climate was not unlike that of England; there was land aplenty to be had; and they could live - not just worship - according to their own laws.
