I live in a very hard water area and can't keep on top of the limescale that kills my electric kettles. I'm thinking of buying a stove top, would that suffer the same fate?
Our kettle used to be like yours with limescale but since we started putting in water from the water filter instead of straight from the tap it is no longer a problem.
I tried the water filter some years ago when I bought (another) new kettle. It didn't seem to make much difference or perhaps the kids were filling the kettle straight from the tap.
When our children, now adults came around they used to do that until we told them and now they always use it from the filter we no longer get it and kettles last a lot longer too.
I can tell you that brita filters do work to reduce the kettle furring up. Both the jugs and the tap filters have the same stuff in but you must be rigorous about using them and replacing the filters. I live in a very very hard water area and always used a jug filter till we got a filter tap.
The only thing I would say about that is that you can't then use filtered water for any other function unless you put it through the kettle. If filtering is going to work then why not get a jug or a tap and any kettle you like?
A water softener is the real answer. Not cheap but no more messing about getting the limescale off taps etc. Kettles, washing machines etc last for many years.
woofy - one of those scare stories. The amount of salt in softened water is absolutely minimal. I'm 74, have been drinking softened water for around 50 years and have only recently been put on tablets for high blood pressure.
We used a water filter jug for a while but I went back to buying cheap kettles again when I weighed up the cost of the filter inserts. A box of 6 was more than a new supermarket kettle. Not very environmentally friendly but a lot less fuss.
