War Memorial....

.... Just back from a few days in North Norfolk where we visited Burnham Market. In the middle of the green is the war memorial and the inscription reads

In memory of the men.....who gave their lives for their country in the Great War 1914 - 1919

Can anyone explain why the date is 1919 and not the usual 1918

"The 1919 date refers to the year when the Treaty of Versailles was signed. This was the peace treaty drawn up by the nations who attended the Paris Peace Conference and officially ended the
state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers when it was signed on 28th June 1919."

Perhaps some of the men took a few months to die by which time the war had ended but were still recorded on the memorial.

That's Norfolk for you :) I was in Burnham Market last year and noticed the date on the Memorial.

I knew about the 1914-1919 date but from the same link,

"Some war memorials also feature the dates 1914-1921, although this is less common. On 25th August 1921 the United States of America signed a separate peace treaty with Germany, the
Treaty of Berlin."

Lovely part of the world, janzman - have stayed at The Hoste a few times, and in the Railway House. Would love to be up there on a sunny cold day like today....
