Gardening In September

September is the end of Summer and start of Autumn. During this time it's important to make preparations for the changing weather.

Some odd jobs you can do:

- Top up bird baths and feeders for migrating birds such as swallows and house martins.
- Clean out the water butt so it’s clean and clear when the heavens open.
- If you want to clear any garden debris, we would recommend using a lawn scarifier and aerator to remove any dead vegetation and moss.

What preparations will you be making this month (if any)?

I put the sun parasol into the loft yesterday, and 'er indoors passed the sun lounger cushions up for storage.

Taking cuttings of things I want to overwinter on the windowsills, I only have a balcony but it's rammed full of plants

Picking the last of some of the veg for freezing, planting cabbage in the raised bed, earthing up leeks, starting to pick apples for freezing in various forms -vacuum packed raw, sweet pie fillings and savoury applesauce. Lots of work and its too cold to sit out and enjoy the remaing show of autumn flowing plants. Hopefully we will have a nice warm spell in September.

I cleared my pots of summer bedding plants and planted my winter pansies today,raked moss from lawn and mowed grass and generally had a good tidy up,the bird feeders were topped up last week.

I trimmed the bush first time this year and last think i chose a good time

I have been am and will be chopping down expletive deleted brambles. My waterbutts are sealed and still partially full from the wet summer so don't need cleaning out.

Damsons are ripe for jams. Get the sugar, bottles & labels ready.

i have a huge and annoying hydrangea that waves in my eyeline and constantly makes me think someone is at the front door. My husband likes it, i do not.
Every time i ask him about cutting it back he informs me it's not the right time of year. However i swear i have asked him in all seasons and the answer always seems to be "not the right time of year".
When IS the correct time?
