How Do I Walk Into The Class Without Shame?
5 Answers
I'm a 22-year-old woman and I've recently moved to Italy in the city of Padova to study Italian history. My plan is to move to Rome to study acting. I'm only here to improve my Italian. I speak English, Greek, French and Italian besides my native language. At the hostel I'm completely confident speaking fluently with people in the languages I've learned so far. But at the university I have no idea why I keep stuttering and making mistakes in front of the other students. I feel too nervous to talk to people at the university. I've lived in the Greek section of Cyprus for 5 years and I speak Greek fluently. Since the time I've started learning Italian I do confuse it with Italian, but I talk more confidently with Greek people outside the university than the only and one Greek guy in my class. When I'm in front of him I forget all my Greek and I keep making embarrassing mistakes. To cover my mistakes I speak about stupid things and then they seem surprised and I don't know how to look them into their eyes afterwards. I'm overall quite confident in my abilities, but I have no idea why this happens to me. I don't want to face my classmates because I remember all the embarrassing things I've done in front of them. Being an overthinker makes it worse. Any idea what's wrong and what I need to do?

If it helps, you could do what professional public speakers often do: write down the key points you want to make and don't be afraid to refer to your notes as a reminder. The main thing is to remember your views are as valid as anyone else's and you're just as entitled to put them forward. And don't worry about making mistakes: anyone who speaks five languages is allowed to get them mixed up occasionally.
