WW1 is commonly described as 1914 to 1918, but on our local war memorial it is shown as 1914 to 1919.

Why might this be?

No idea, the official date for the end of that war is 11.11.1918

1919 refers to the treaty of Versailles, the official end.

11/11 was the armistice.

Perhaps the memorial is to cover casualties who died of their injuries after the war officially ended.

Unless someone knows better?

The 11.11.18 date was only the Armistice and the Peace Treaty was the following year.

I know that my local war memorial is dated 1918, I have googled Great War Memorial plaques and there are many of each - 1918 and 1919.
