Burial of coffins in cemetries

I know this did happen in New Orleans USA but does anyone know if is it true that cemetry workers in Australia are also piercing all of the coffins to stop them from being raised up in the ground, if any water gets under them.

Although the practise you describe could have happened in the Mississippi delta region, the fact is, especially around New Orleans, the water table is so high that graves cannot be dug. The hole fills with water before the casket could be placed in it, hence cemeteries throughout the area are built above ground in vaults and mausoleums. Most are marble and are called "cities of the dead". Many communities in the area, including portions of New Orleans have laws requiring above ground burials...
