temenos

Trying to find out what a temenos was. I googled for it, but only found summary definitions such as 'sacred space, sacred piece of land, sometimes surrounding a temple or an altar, sometimes walled off' - etc. I'd like to read something a little more extensive, particularly about the refuge function that I believe (but do not know for sure) they had.
