What is Latin America and why "Latin". Anything to do with the Romans?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I always thought it was referred to as Latin America because of the Latino population, that is, the mainly Spanish migrants who travelled there during the Spanish occupation of Mexico, Texas, etc.

Latin America is so called due to the migration of Europeans (particularly Spanish and Portuguese) who also brought there Latin languages with them. Latin America covers a large part of the world including South America, Central America and some of North America (i.e. Mexico) as well as some Caribbean islands.
