More than just friendly, James I's mother Mary was married to the French King and she was until his death Queen Consort of France. James's father however was her second husband and cousin Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley.
As our friends north of the border will tell you, the Stewarts were already on the throne in 1603 but "came to the throne" of England that year after the death of Elizabeth. James I of England was James VI of Scotland, and by this time the family name of Stewart had progressed to the French spelling of Stuart.
