It's allegorical, you can love thy enemies but hate the things that they do. i.e. we shouldn't hate satan, only his evil ways.

Equally the Bible is contradictory and Fridays are far too close to the weekend to carry out theological examinations (see Matthew 5 & Matthew 13).

In the beginning, there was an uprising in Heaven, led by Satan/Lucifer, God threw him out, and gave him Earth as his domain,'Hell on Earth', for a period of time. If that time hasn't yet expired, then the true ruler of Earth is the Devil, and God the enemy.

In the new Testament, the temptations of Jesus, the things that the Devil offered him, were his to give.

Thats just an abridged version of what happened, and why we stray from the straight and narrow, but by rights, we should all be Devil worshipers, and against God,

Satan? The enemy? Are u mad, look at music, The Stones - satanic, The Osmonds - god fearing!!!, drugs, drink, sex, tv, music, fun! all the work of satan. He aint that bad.
Thats all we need, Sympathy For The Devil.....
James 4; 7 Subject yourselves, therefore, to God; but oppose the Devil, and he will flee from YOU. The scripture you quoted applies to people on the earth. Satan has ALWAYS been an enemy of God and Man, and is not in the same category.
Lonnie, it was Jesus, as the angel michael, who threw Satan out of heaven. Revelation 12; 7-10 & 12. [(Revelation 12:7-9) And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels battled with the dragon, and the dragon and its angels battled 8 but it did not prevail, neither was a place found for them any longer in heaven. 9 So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him.

(Revelation 12:12) On this account be glad, YOU heavens and YOU who reside in them! Woe for the earth and for the sea, because the Devil has come down to YOU, having great anger, knowing he has a short period of time.

Brilliant answers so far, Lonnie has interesting ideas. I do believe this is the test right now on Earth, so use your conciense to guide you and be alert for the evils around you do not cavort with the Devil. It is the ultimate show of appeciation to God to prove that you are not a slave to the evil of the world and that you act with love and compassion for your neighbours. It is very comforting to know that their are people out there still living as God intended, see you all on Judgement Day.
Another reason why Satan is not included in the list of enemies that deserve forgiveness. Matthew 12; 31&32 '31 On this account I say to YOU, Every sort of sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the spirit will not be forgiven. 32 For example, whoever speaks a word against the Son of man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the holy spirit, it will not be forgiven him, no, not in this system of things nor in that to come.
