vauxall astra 16v heater matrix

I have a 1996 1.6 16v astra which only blows cold/lukewarm air through the heater vents. I have tried changing the thermostat and bleeding the system but it has made no difference.

I think I the heater matrix is blocked and needs changing, but when I contacted www.buypartsby.co.uk they said that it is a different matrix to the 8v and they do not stock it.

Has anyone got any idea where I can get a new matrix from, will the one from the 8v fit?

Have you tried back flushing the system? I mean removing the bottom radiator hose, forcing water under some pressure, (with a garden hose for example) thro the system. Ensure you remove the filler cap! This will probably shift any gunge that might be in the system. Its messy & wet ,but cheaper than a new matrix.

Before changing it just check that the controls are actually doing what they should and are not letting cold air through. Back flushing will never clear a matrix properly, it may flow through but it will bypass the worst bits that count where there are fine multiple waterways that gradually fill up reducing the output, worth a try though. A radiator specialists will probably stock or get the matrix.

You were both right, I got a new matrix but was unable to remove all the bolts from the matrix cover inside the car. They were a strange 5.5mm size and one at the back was impossible to get too. I have no idea what tool you would use, but an adjustable spanner was no good.

By now I had the hoses all stripped out so I tried back flushing the matrix. By reversing the direction of flush I managed to get quite a lot of gunge out.

The heater now works but only about 60% of full heat. Much better though. Thanks for your help.
