Augustus Caesar divided Transalpine Gaul into four provinces - Narbonensis, Belgica, Lugdunensis and Aquitania. I don't know whether this is what you are after.

Thanks for answering Hammond Egg but I just discovered that it wasn't Four states of Gaul after all and i was supposed to know the quote 'All Gaul was quartered into three halves'. The actual answer was the aquitani, Galli (celtae) and Belgae.
according to 1066 And All That, Julius Caesar divided the Gauls into the weeny, the weedy and the weaky. (Latin joke.)

The opening line of Julius Caesar's book, 'The Civil War' is "All of Gaul is divided into three parts". Going on to say, these are Belgae, Aquitani and Celts.

However, according to Asterix, all of Gaul is divided into four parts. Just another of life's mysteries.

Slap on the wrist. The opening lines are from Ceasar's "The Gallic War" which sometimes seems to be called "The Conquest of Gaul" and not from The Civil War. Mind you, it doesn't make a lot of difference about the number of parts.

Juilius Caesar predates Augustus Caesar.

Asterix is set at the time of Augustus.

So Julius Caesar was right, and so was Asterix.

And so. of course, was waimarie.

didn't Asterix meet Julius Caesar, Hammond Egg? I suspect the exact timing of his adventures is left a bit vague. Given that they were first produced in the 1950s, I suspect the real era they are set in is 1939-45, the French trying to convince themselves they're really valiant fighters who can win wars (if only they had a magic potion).

here's wikipedia on the subject: it says 50BC, which is Julius Caesar's time and so the period Troytempest's question was about

I stand corrected, jno.
