Saint Enoch and the masons

Does anybody know why Saint Enoch train station, later turned into St Enoch Square and shopping centre, in Glasgow got its name. Enoch was an obscure figure in the old testament and was involved with the nephilim. The story of Enoch is quite central to masonic rituals, can anyone shed any further light?

I was in St. Enochs sq on Saturday and luckily I didn't see any masons.

maybe you weren't looking properly? If you were in glasgow on a saturday you will have definately rubbed shoulders with a few masons. the movement is endemic in scottish society

Well I did see some undesirables gettin on the underground, but they were only Rangers fans so I don't think there will be any masons among them.

Undesirables? I presume you are not from Glasgow? Rangers colours are red white and blue, not green and white. The undesirables that you were so unfortunate to have inflicted upon your eyes were celtic fans.

Perhaps you were lucky that the masons in the black uniform were there, to look after the decent folk.

Well why am i anti-catholic? where did i mention religion? Or are you going for a Derrida stance? I don't care about religion, race etc. I'm a secularist, but also don't undermine anyone elses decisions, tradition etc. You, on the other hand do. I am not a mason, I have no opinion on the organisation. However, as a historian I view it as an object for study and rather than let you dwell in your obvious bigotry, i'll just let you know that they do a lot of charity work. But yes i will agree in certain areas a lot of questionable people are drawn to them, but they hold similar views of the organisation as yourself. It is not the masons that do not allow catholics to join, it is a medievil papal bull.

Please do not feel that i am trying to support them etc but rather give you an alternative view, instead of your broad generalisations like the one you pigeonholed me with, when i had made absolutely no mention of religion and the other charges you levelled at me.

As I said AEU before maybe you didn't read that bit I am not a bigot and I hate all forms of bigotry. I apologise that I implied you are one. But I don't like organiseations like the Free mason, orange order or any other religeous group, whether catholic or prostatant. I am a Catholic and go to mass but there are many thing I don't like about the RC church. Does that make me a bigot?

Now just to clear some mis understandings, and bring some light, hopalong you are saying that you don't like organisations such as free masonery Orange groups, then I would like to know why you are going every sunday to the church? jus to tell you that Catholisme is one the mas organisations in the world. And for your info in free masonery will be never against any religion, there in there mids, al the world religion are represented because every one of us belief's in a god not in prophets.I am sure that in your 46 you have been helped out by a free masson even without your aknowledge that this person whas one.so just think about it before making conclusions about people of things that you do not understand, ho yes for your info Iam 48 years old.An other info that I can give as well known Scotmans where Free masons such has Walter Scott, Robert Burns and I will be not surprised if there are not Celtic or ranger player who are Free masons.

thanks belgian. My research isn't actually freemasonary, but history of medicine at ed uni. However, i do have quite a lay interest in it. The books that sparked this are 'Uriel's Machine' and 'the hiram key' both by Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas, who are also english freemasons.

So i was entirgued that St Enoch square, station, etc was named what it was. Nickmoo provided an answer to how it got its name, but i still reckon there was some sort of freemasonary directive, so to speak, behind it etc. So do you know anything about glasgow lodges and enoch?
