The promoters of the movie advertise it as 'based on true events'.

In actual fact the events depicted in the movie are all fictional. The character of Leatherface, however is loosely based on Ed Gein, the notorious serial killer (remember The Silence of the Lambs) who was known for wearing human masks.

No doubt something similar might have happened, especially since the movie was made, but the movie was independent of those events.

Hi...first "The Taxas Chainsaw Masacre" is a classic film. Second....DO NOT BELIEVE in the certain nonsense surrounding this film that claims it is a true story. IT ISN'T! Never mind what the text on the video sleeve claims, or what the narrator in the introduction says. Leatherface's character was LOOSELY based on the exploits of Wisconsin farmer (like justsia said) Ed Gein, a serial killer who also provided the inspiration for Norman Bates character in Psycho as well as Hannibal Lector and Buffalo Bills characters in Silence of the Lambs, but there was no actual Texas Chainsaw Massacre. PERIOD!!! Oh..and the original is way better than the remake.
