Why was Edward VIII called Edward VIII when his name was David? Similarly George VI, whose name, I believe, was Albert?

Sometimes the name used within the family was one that had never been used as a name for a British King/Queen and there seems to have been a tradition of keeping to the same names. It must have been quite confusing as George VI's younger brother was actually callled George. I don't think that it will be repeated in the future.
Same reason as Prince Harry's actual first name is Henry.
not quite, simon. Harry is "short" for henry, as in a recognised nickname. edward is not short for david. Edward was his second name, which he preferred.
And the obvious answer - King Dave would sound silly!
Better than King Ted, RCP?
Edward VIII was born Edward, Albert, Christian, George, Andrew, Patrick,David Windsor. He was known as David, because that was the name used by his family and friends.
I'd prefer King Eddie.
I understand that Prince Charles has said that he will not be Charles III because of unfortunate associations with Charles I losing his head. I think he said he would be George VII (one of his other names). Incidentally, they have more money and more land than us. How come they've got more names too?
