The flower has been adopted as Englands emblem since the time of the Wars of the Roses - civil wars between the royal house of Lancaster whose emblem was a red rose and the royal house of York whose emblem was a white rose.
The Red Rose (Lancs) and the White Rose (Yorks) were combined by Henry Tudor to form the Tudor Rose. Although this is not the English emblem now as the true red rose now seems to be predominant . Lancs wins again and it is still a palitinate.
