Penguin pb of many years ago, Digging up the Past(?), gave histories of several, Leonard Woolley etc, digging in Mesopotamia, Assyria etc. Rawlinson(?). lost a barge laden with finds in one of the rivers. He also found that tribesmen had deliberately defaced stones (listing kings?).. Presumably the sunken stones are beyond recall?

next In WWII, did someone secretly stockpile vast amounts of metal etc, which was then used to re-arm after the Dunkirk withdrawal?
