Did Harry S Truman disclose what the S stood for? I seem to remember a story where he wouldn't disclose the name that it stood for so as not to offend one or other side of his family.

It didn't actually stand for anything. According to http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_S_Truman, both Truman's grandfathers had names beginning with S, so the initial was a 'compromise' between the two.
