Standing for "God Save The Queen"
36 Answers
I was at an Ex-Servicemen's club last night because ma nephew way playing in his band there. At the end there was an announcement by one of the members that the National Anthem would be played as usual. At the time, I was sitting at ma table and didn't stand. I was telt I had to stand and when I replied I didn't, I was asked to leave the hall whilst it was being played, which I did.
I object to the words of the Anthem as in the final verse it says,
"Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!"
Do you think I was correct or was it disrespectful?

It should be every man's choice to or not for exactly the sort of reasons you've stated Loon.If they would like the Irish/Scots/Welsh to stand for an anthem that denigrates their own home countries then they have unrealistic expectations. It wasn't disrespectful in my opinion, but people think because you are technically part of Britian you should be happy, accept that and go along with their daft wee tune.I think if I came up with an alternative national anthem with lyrics that involved killing a load of English not many of em would stand up, would they?Usually they can't see the irony of that though...
That is the last verse the whole national anthem goes like this 1. God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen!
2. O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall;
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all!
3. Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!
4. Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over.
5. From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!
6. Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the King!
but the very last verse is usually sung only in Scotland and they always sing king
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen!

Fine but for that last verse. maybe made sense at one time, but I think anyone would agree, is now obsolete and is now to be deleted from the current version. I think this is a safe action without any embarasment of enquiring upon Her Maj. if appropiate so to do. (Acting in Her and Her subjects best interests without further direction)
The Scots run our parliament,even though you have your own,our Royal family is German/Greek,and everybody on telly,and radio is Scottish/Welsh/Asian or Afro/Carribean.
Us English bend over backwards to accomodate all races and religions.Its about time you lot had an operation to remove that huge chip on your collective shoulders.
We don't bear grudges against our former masters.....
Apart from the bloody Romans of course!
Get over it.

It's good to know that there are other people who refuse to stand for the National Anthem.
Why on earth should I be expected to stand for a tune which calls on a non-existent god to 'save' a monarch whom I refuse to acknowledge, which is played as the anthem of a nation I wish didn't exist. (I believe in a single Europe, with the abolition of the Westminster parliament and direct rule from Brussels).
I always stand for the European Anthem (Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy') but never for the National Anthem.
Chris
PS: I would probably have been even more unpopular than the CorbyLoon at an ex-serviceman's club on Remembrance Sunday. Although I'm happy to donate to the Royal British Legion (to support the work they do for the living), I believe that the dead are best forgotten. (I never attend funerals and I believe that the holding of funerals or memorial events should be made a criminal offence). In consequence of these views, I always refuse to wear a poppy.
Well done, CorbyLoon, for standing up (or should that be sitting down?) for your principles!

Yes jl, that's the one. Not sure why you think Corby's bad, mind you while me and ma sister were watching the first part of the gig, ma nephew's brother was out walking not far far fae their house when he was attacked by a gang of 10.
Anyway, the Westminster Parliament is the Parliament of the UK not just England, so twhy should Scots not have the right to occupy the chief positions of government ?
