In these days of political correctness I am surprised it has taken as long as this to have them installed.

Ultimately though they are just glorified tourist guides multi tasking in doing the job of securicor ie: protecting the crown jewels too.

Oh dear where will it all end, after 522 years a woman has been selected out of six candidates on merit alone (yer) Damn PC again. It's bad enough having 5 foot nothing Police Women.

Will the Queen now have Men in Wating, Men of the Bed Chamber? don't think so somehow.

Perhaps now we could see, Females in the Houshold Cavalry, (would they have to redesign their Breast-Plates)? or even in the Foot Guards, of course their Bearskins would have to be set, blow-waved and styled.
I don't think that the job of Beefeater necessarily requires a human with testicles and a 'you know what' to do it!

Apparently she will be treated no differently from the Yoemen & will wear exactly the same outfit as them!

I wonder if that'll include her wearing a pair of Y-Fronts?
Just to say that the lady in question - who i actually know as she is a good friend of the family, moira is 5 ft 9 tall and not like a 5 ft nothing police woman as antheoldgit is thinking. she has been inthe army for 22 years and this is a very male orientated job so i know she will definately be up for all the stick she may have thrown at her. good luck to her

Yes Laura - I read all about Moira's background, age, height, etc., in the paper this morning &
I'm sure she will do an excellent job in protecting Queen & residence.

I must admit to being initially surprised on hearing this news until I thought back.......

One of our daughter's worked extremely hard at College & as an apprentice for 5 years before qualifying & becoming the first female in the male dominated company she worked for. She also initially took stick from some of the immature males that had worked there for some years.

However, once she reached 21, passed her apprenticeship & had gained all her many City & Guild certificates (mostly distinctions), they all realised what she was made of ( & not just sugar & spice) & respected her.

She asked no special favours from anyone - only requesting a toilet of her own & can you blame her?!

She is now a happliy married Mum of two daughters.

BTW - My Y-Fronts comment was very tongue in cheek!

You'd be amazed at some of the comments our daughter used to put up with at times - but as I said, some of the immature men soon came to respect her hard working & mature outlook within their working environment!
