This indeed happened - but Moses big mistake was to take the glory for himself - and not to give God the honour for this miracle!! God then told him he would be allowed to see Caanan (The Promised Land), but not enter it - that honour would go to Joshua.
That's it - before he died Moses was shown the land from Mount Nebo with the promise that it would go to his descendants, but he would never cross it.
As you can tell this is a potted version - hope it makes sense. :-)
However, because he was so cheesed off with the Israelites moaning on at him he struck the rock with his staff in temper.
Everything else Cetti says is right ie Moses seeing The Promised Land etc.
Sorry for being pedantic but this is exactly what my RE teacher told our class all those years ago!
As I said, God told Moses to speak to the rock in front of the people. But as Moses struck the rock instead God punished him for not obeying Him exactly which would have brought glory upon Him in front of the people, ie Moses telling the rock to pour forth water in the name of The Lord etc. etc.
Once again, sorry for being pedantic, but this is exactly what my RE teacher told us all those years ago and mummyof3 stated that her son had been asked to find the answer, I suppose it could be RE coursework or something so I'm just trying to clear it up.
