The first President went by the title of President of the Continental Congress and then in March, 1781, the office was known as the President of the United States in Congress Assembled.

President of the United States of America is a term mentioned in the American Constitution , so George Washington was the first President of the USA since the others had different official titles.

the way the question as been worded THECORBYLOON is correct. According to my little QI book, the first American president was Peyton Randolph he was the first of 14 pre-Washington Presidents
they are now known to insiders as POTUS, I'm told. Their wives are FLOTUS (First Lady of the USA). Just thought I'd throw that in, since TCL has answered the actual question. I was really interested to read about the pre-presidents, though, I knew nothing of them before. Good work, everyone!
