Is there a website which summarises the laws in different states in the US for tourists? The kind of unusual laws tourists should know about, not the usual ones like we have here...

If you're over 21 I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Below 21, there might be nuances on drinking in bars and marrying your cousin etc..., otherwise nothing for you to worry about.

There is the wierd one about not overtaking a school bus - even if it is stopped on the other side of the road - this varies from state to state

Isn't there something about not being able to stop in the road to turn right if the road's busy and instead you have to go up and turn round?

Heh? Is this 'turn right on red' law (I think that is how it works). I.e. if at a junction, you can turn right, on a red light, if the way is clear.

This applies in NJ, but not NY (from what I recall). I seem to recall it is marked at junctions... might be wrong.

Now I see why you asked the question :-D

ps the thing re: school-buses picking up and dropping off is true, certainly in NJ. All the barriers and alarms and flashing lights the bus starts 'doing' are quite incredible so you can hardly miss it... quite a sight to behold, rather hilarious on a way.

State laws are one thing, I was reminded this afternoon that there are county laws too!

I went shopping at Walmart in Bergen County in NJ (opposite Manhattan on the Jersey side). Apparently the county prohibits the sale of domestic appliances on Sunday!

Who'd have thought ...
