animals during WW1

was not sure if to post this in here or iin the animal section
anyway
i need to know if anybody knows anything about animals during WW1
how were thye used etc

Horses were used in battle and to pull the guns .They had cats in the trenches because of the vermin .Carrier pigeons played a role . Dogs were used as messengers in the trenches .
Just google animals WWI or narrow it down to a specific animal WW1

Pigeons played a vital part in World War One as they proved to be an extremely reliable way of sending messages. Such was the importance of pigeons that over 100,000 were used in the war with an astonishing success rate of 95% getting through to their destination with their message.

I can tell you that horses played a major role, many of them coming from England, Cleveland Bays and Draft horses were sent to the front line to pull the gun carriages, donkeys and mules were used for pack animals. Pigeons were used as carriers of messages and played an equally vital part, they were also the target of the German guns, obviously to stop messages getting back to England.
Dogs were used to carry medicines to the front line, and to sniff out whether gas was being used. Jilly Cooper has written a book about animals at war, and it is deeply moving and shocking, it is worth reading as she has gone into great depth about the subject.
