In simplified form, there are three grades of listing according to the Culture Department: Grade II buildings are of special interest and every effort should be made to preserve them Grade II* - two starred - are especially important buildings that are of more than special interest Grade I buildings are those of exceptional interest. The distinctions are really explained in basic terms by the italicised adjective phrases above.
