You can try to trace a marriage for either on www.freeBMD.co.uk not all areas are covered but the site will explain, this would give you a possible name change, if you wanted to be certain you can obtain a copy of the certificate cost about 7 pounds.
If you try www.genesreunited.co.uk you may find they are looking for you, you may have to join about 15 pounds. Put your name on family tree, don't add any living relations without their consent, ie mum and sister, If you know names of dead relatives like grandparents or great grandparents put them on your tree and see if they match any other trees, they may know where your mum is.
There is also a board on this site where you can post trying to trace and check on previous postings. also there are some incredible people who will search all sorts of sites to try and help you, they are on the tips board. Both tips and search boards are under community.
If you are asking for help on genes try during the day or early evening as the best helpers go to bed and the amount of postings mean yours could get overlooked.
write down the full names, dates and places of birth, maiden names etc it makes it easier abd quicker.
