Does anyone know what the abbreviation G of E stands for, please? It has a religious significance, I believe, and I have found it in a reference dating to the 1890's.
Thanks. No, not Garden of Eden. I think it stands for an organisation, like Church of England. It is used in the context that G of E were the organisers of a large and important religous concert in the 1890's.
Definitely G of E. It occurs in a bronze dedicated to part of the Choralis Constantinus by Heinrich Isaac - the chant "I have seen His star in the East". G of E either organised the concert or the bronze or both.
Sounds like it could be anything. Was it in a particular place, it could be something like (e.g.) Georges of Esher, or Grants of Ely referring to a local firm?
Thank you. Could be, I suppose, but it is most likely to be a Catholic society in existence at the end of the 1800's. My own thinking is currently along the line that the E may stand for Ejus, but I have been unable to think of a word beginning with G that might stand for "Friends" or "Society" etc.
