My Grt Grandfather was born in 1862 in Spain, his parents were English and he spent all his life ,except for the first two years, in England.I do not know what place in Spain he was born. What I would like to know is how I go about getting a birth certificate for him,I have already tried the British Embassy. I would certainly appreciate being able to fin out. Also his mothers name before she married was Weeples but her fathers surname was either gough or gould. thanks

Then he should be in the 1871 census as a nine year old and
in the 1881 census (which I think is FREE on the net as a nineteen year old)

If youc an find him in the 1871 census it should be with his parents - you will also get the names of other siblings and knock a year off the eldest sib to get an idea of the year of the marriage

The Mothers maiden name is not given in the census but here county of birth is,
and some of them are computerised

the custom was to get married in the womans town and so the marriage should be recorded in that county.

anyway that is a start.

Thanks Peter, but each census has name changes eg.His name is frederick charles william in one census, another is charles, and there is another down as thomas, though all the other information seems to fit. Martijo
So on the 1881, 91 and 1901 census, what does it say for his place of birth or the place of birth of any parents or siblings? in later returns the town and country should be given, not just the country.
