Need to know how far it is from the port in Venice, Italy to the train station in Venice. Believe it or not the Windstar cruise line couldn't answer this even though we will coming in on their ship.

Venice allows motor vehicles such as taxis to go so far but no further. The area where buses and taxis set down is called Piazalle Roma, across the canal from the station. There are links by vaporetto (water bus - cheap) and water taxi which are quite good to understand. A taxi from Piazalle Roma to the boat dock, depending on where your boat is placed, is about 10 euros.
From where the cruise ships dock it's a 15 min walk just to St Mark's Sq. Up lots of steps and over bridges. But it's not far. You can get a vaporetto (water taxi) from one of the stands, and go up the Grand canal to the station. If you have luggage, there is a ramp at the east side of the station, don't need to drag luggage up the stairs. Ask which vaporetto to get. Most will go to the station, I think. The locals pay 1 Euro a ticket. Tourists pay more. If you want to use the vaporetto a lot, you can get a pass.
The main station is very close to the port - you can catch the vaporetto one stop up to Piazzale Roma and from there you can [a] walk for about 10 mins dragging your luggage [b] wait for the 'free' bus that is meant to run to the port from outside the public loos - but never showed up when we were there; [c] get the 6/ bus - note it is 6/ and not just the 6 - which leaves from busstop C3 and drops you off at the port gates or [d] take a cab which will be a 3 minute journey..
There is no direct water bus to the port - you could also take a private water taxi but I have heard this is quite expensive.
I reiterate what looney tunes says - you do not go anywhere near St Marks Sq - in fact from the station you go in totally the opposite direction. That Europeforvisitors website is fantastic btw.
