Mungo Jerry, Dingbat and Le Roi. Le Roi is the boss of them.
The three lions' names were actually given out on the 6 O ' clock news tonight - but only very quickly right at the end. All I can remember is that they were Norman and the last lion was named by Henry11 in honour of his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine.
Three Lions... 1) Hon 2) Ay 3) Shert (Jules Rimet still gleaming!)
Cetti. The news said that two lions passant were the heraldic arms of William the Conqueror and because of and from 1066 then also became the heraldic arms of England and remained so until the time of Henry11 who added the third as you say.
Thanks Maude - that's right, but Mark Austin gabbled the actual names of the lions so fast that we only managed to get the lion named Eleanor. Possibly Louvain for the second, but the first reamains a mystery - probably all a myth anyway but still makes a good story. ;-)
aquitaine was the name of one of the lions but apparently the FA have re-branded them (honest) and one is now called roary - nice work from the men in suits once again!
Richard Starkey ( The historian) says that the three lions were the family coat of arms of Richard the first (Lion Heart) being the emblem of the Angoven empire. Anjou is in modern day france which is ironic. Apparently there is a statue of Lion Heart with three lions on his shirt outside the houses of parliament.
Lion 1 is called Rollo after a Duke of Normandy, 2 is called Maine (a country that was added to Normandy) and 3 is Aquitaine (added by HenryII to represent the Duchy where his wife came from). The FA couldn't help that much except to say that they have rebranded them Roary, Pauz & Mayne! Hope this helps! Up the Real Wombles!
