Something similar happened in France 250 years earlier. Philip IV died and his three sons Louis X, Philip V and Charles IV all succeeded him. Louis did have a son John I but he was born after his father's death and died while still a baby. Louis had older daughters but they were excluded from inheriting the throne by an act passed by Philp V. When Philip V and Charles also had no children the crown passed to a cousin, Philip VI, the first of the Valois kings. The real "wrinkle" in the story is that because daughters were excluded, Philip IV's daughter Isabella was disinherited also. She was the wife of Edward II of England and mother of the future Edward III. It was Edward III's claim to the throne of France through his mother that led to the 100 Years War.
