I have two relatives, Rosanna Farrell born in Sicily c1815 and Charles Farrell c1813 Italy. The dad John was Irish, I am assuming he was in the army although I have no proof yet of this. I have looked on most of the geneology sites and cannot find any record of their births (I can find both in the England censuses 1841 onwards). The Family Search Mormons do not have records for Italy. Does anyone know anything that may help.
Thank you

hi teabag

I have looked in the index for army chaplain registers of births 1796 to 1830 and I cannot find them, in sicily or anywhere else that the British Army were based. sorry, I will look in a few more places if i get the chance.
also looked in the GRO REGIMENTAL BIRTH INDICES SUPPLEMENT(1761 to 1924) and the GRO REGIMENTAL BIRTH INDICES (1761 to 1924) and though there are plenty of farrells, none with these names or bithplace.

i know the British army were in control on sicily at the time the children were born and so there is every reason to suppose their father was serving in the army, have you researched the history of the garrison there? It may give you an idea whicvh regiment was stationed there at those particular times
ooo I just read this:
It was in May 1809 that the 2nd battalion 27th (Inniskilling) regiment under the command of Lieut-Colonel Haviland Smith, sailed from Malta for service on Sicily, in spite of the danger to Malta by cutting the number of British infantrymen based there to around 1,400.

this link is good, it tells u where they recsuited the Irish soldiers:

Thanks again, I have looked at the regiments website you gave and it looks like a good lead. I think I can follow this up. Many thanks for your trouble.
