The first major battle was the battle of Mons where the numericaly inferior British army stopped thew Germans in there tracks:

I think it was in Africa ..Togoland or somewhere like that . Colonial type arguments .The German forces in SW Africa attacked South Africa ?
On the Western front I think it was The Marne. Although there were minor skirmishes elsewhere in Serbia ,Russia and so on .
No doubt someone with more knowledge can say for sure .
