It comes down to pronunciation, and the current fashion is to pronounce it boo-dicca (Boudicca), rather than the traditional bow-di-see-ah (Boadicea). None of us could really know how the Iceni pronounced it, but what we do know is that the name comes from the ancient Celtic or Old Welsh word �bouda� for victory.

The historian Tacitus gives us the only contemporary spelling of her name, "Boadicca". In fact, the Romans called her Boudicca and Boadicea Victoria. So neither is incorrect.

pronounced /bɒʊˈdiːka:/, although it is mispronounced by many as /ˈbuːdɪkə/

Unfortunately I can't remember any of my phonetic studies, but I think that means the first syllable rhymes with 'how'. Anyone able to set me right?

But of course Ocatvius is right, nobody knows how the Iceni spoke or wrote; all we've got to go on is how the Romans thought it was, and they may well have got it wrong, just as we do when we try to pronounce Russian or Arabic words, even when we've agreed on a spelling.
