Saluting Magpies?

Why do some people salute on seeing Magpies (one for sorrow -two for joy etc.,) & where does it originate from please?

A medieval superstition believed that Satan walking the earth took the form of a magpie, and if you saluted him, it inferred that you had recognised him in his disguise, and his evil against you was neutralised.
